AbstractEvery year, thousands of history teachers nationwide stand before their students describing the evils of using an open source encyclopedia for research projects. The teachers warn of lower grades and a general unfulfilled life for any student who uses Wikipedia in a research bibliography. Yet those same students who listen to the fiery words and threats of their history teachers, continue to use Wikipedia as a "one stop shopping" for all assignments. What better place than Wikipedia to find everything a student needs for a report--but not for a historical research project. Wikipedia can provide useful facts for a summary report, but the anonymity and quantity of authors is problematic for historical research. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, a tool to use at the beginning of a research project: to get ideas. It is meant to guide one in the direction of other resources to get more information. However, never is it the first and only source. In this article, the author offers some tips on how to help students to learn the different types of sources. (Contains 4 notes.) (ERIC).
