Abstract | In 1982, the UC Berkeley Gifted Program took in its first cohort. The initial group consisted of 282 middle and high school students. As was the case with many programs for gifted youths, admission to the program was based on students' SAT scores, and urban students were underrepresented. In this article, the author discusses how the program has evolved, with a special emphasis on the changes that were made to facilitate the participation of urban youths. After this general introduction, he presents a description of the program, followed by information related to serving youths in urban settings, including: (1) selection of students; (2) outreach and partnerships; (3) support structures; and (4) community building. He uses data from the program's annual evaluations to provide some empirical support for the programs. (Contains 1 figure and 2 tables.) (ERIC). |
