Abstract | To address the varying needs of media specialists, area Educational Technology Training Centers, Regional Educational Service Agencies (RESA), and larger school systems are forming professional development communities or consortia that cater specifically to the continuing education needs of library media specialists. In addition to academic and curriculum needs, the media specialists' needs also include meeting in a centralized area closer to home in an effort to reduce costs and make it easier to get away from school for just a few hours three or four times a year instead of three or four days at a time. These are growing concerns in systems where travel, substitute, and professional learning funds are increasingly diminishing. Several years ago, the Central Savannah River Area RESA offered workshops exclusively for media specialists, but there have been no ongoing offerings. Sessions offered by the Fort Discovery Education Technology Training Center do not meet all facets of the media specialist's role and tend to focus on technology. The author reiterates the need for regular courses, workshops, and other sessions for library media specialists. (ERIC). |
