Abstract | The purpose of this research was to study the characteristics of the intragroup relations between the middle-status adolescents in a student group and the other status categories. It is assumed that the social and psychological portrait of an open adolescent student group, the character of the orientation and the level of its development, and the degree of stability of such a community, are determined by the character of relations between those in the middle-status category with each other and with the group as a whole. To check the validity of this "basic hypothesis," the following "consequence hypotheses" were formulated: (1) middle-status adolescents play a specific role in the sphere of relations of attractiveness and interactions with their classmates; (2) middle-status adolescents are more interested in acquiring exhaustive information about the attitudes toward themselves; and (3) middle-status adolescents are less likely to be oriented toward the status of their peers when they construct their own relationships in the class. Using a set of methods and methodological techniques, this study was conducted among 200 ninth- and tenth-graders in Moscow general education schools in all of the classes in accordance with a single unified format. The results found that middle-status adolescents (their status was determined on the basis of the subject's position in the informal intragroup structure of authority) represent a category that is actively preferred sociometrically. The results confirmed the particular hypotheses and the main hypothesis of this study. (Contains 1 table and 1 note.) (ERIC). |
