AbstractThe purpose of this study was to identify key features associated with the successful transition from prison to community life of ex-offending African American and Latino males who have not recidivated in 3 years or more. To better understand and to identify these factors, I conducted 12 in-depth, semi-structured interviews between January 2015 and February 2016 with African American and Latino men in the New York-New Jersey Metropolitan Area who agreed to participate and share their experiences. The study design was influenced by both phenomenological and appreciative inquiry methods of asking affirming questions to encourage participants to focus on what, in their experience, worked for them. It is important to note that although this study took an appreciative focus in nature, the conversations often led to less than positive experiences, as the reality and reentry complexities for many were not as unchallenging as anticipated in this research. Fundamentally, this study aimed to amplify the voices of the participants through their narratives and constructions of how they have avoided recidivism. In sum, as told by the men in this study when asked to describe their experiences in refraining from recidivating, the majority of participants identified external factors, such as education, meaningful employment, vocational and career paths, receiving substance abuse treatment, and positive social support structures as vital resources in refraining from re-offending and/or recidivating post incarceration. Intrinsically, as per the men in this study, while external resources and motivators are imperative to help reduce the chances of recidivating, offenders must participate in and undergo intrinsic transformations if reentry efforts are to succeed. Significantly then, based on the quality of evidence and didactic translations derived from this study, ex-offenders' chances of not recidivating and being successful post incarceration increase when employment opportunities are available, education is factored in and accessible, stable housing and positive family (and social support), are tapped in, and addiction and psychological treatment needs are addressed by reentry efforts prior to and immediately after release from incarceration.
