Abstract | Develop second-language students' reading skills and their English fluency with a balanced approach that combines research with best practices. By assessing students' language and reading during read-alouds, shared reading, guided reading, independent reading, and literature circles, teachers will be able to plan for the most effective instruction. Teachers can also tap into their students' prior knowledge in their primary language while teaching reading in English. The book is filled with such resources as: (1) In-depth lessons and minilessons; (2) Thematic planning with sample units for primary and upper grades; (3) Observation and planning checklists; (4) Recommended books for reading groups; and (5) Recommended guided reading series. Following an introduction, this book is divided into five parts: (1) Getting to Know Our Students; (2) Establishing the Balanced Literacy Program; (3) Read-Alouds and Shared Reading; (4) Guided Reading; and (5) Moving Towards Independence. Appendixes; a list of references; and an index conclude the book. [This book was published by Stenhouse Publishers.] (ERIC). |
