Abstract | The Peace Corps Information Collection and Exchange makes available its information resources to other organizations. This document, made available in English, French, and Swahili, is one such resource. The focus of this document is a comprehensive behavior change approach that concentrates on the development of skills needed for life, such as communication, decision-making, thinking, managing emotions, assertiveness, self-esteem building, resisting peer pressure, and relationship skills. The Life Skills approach is completely interactive, using role plays, games, puzzles, group discussions, and a variety of other innovative teaching techniques to keep the participant wholly involved in the sessions. Teachers, health workers, and community leaders have been able to adapt this model to meet different needs, and suggestions are provided on how to adapt the Life Skills approach to many different contexts. This Manual was compiled and adapted from materials created by: The World Health Organization; the United Nations Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); ACTION AID; the Curriculum and Development Unit, Ministry of Education, Zimbabwe; and UNICEF Harare. Part 1 provides background information and an introduction to the program. Part 2 discusses peer education and Part 3 presents facts about AIDS and STDs. Parts 4, 5, and 6 review communication skills, decision-making skills, and relationship skills. Part 7 summarizes all the information presented for application in the field. Appended are: Warm-Ups and Energizers; Quick Breaks!; Assorted Ideas; and Games and Session Ideas. (JDM) |
