Abstract	This handbook provides guidance about controlling and directing an academic career by suggesting systematic approaches to key areas of responsibility and activity. It explores management and leadership in higher education, developing and promoting research and teaching, and coping with the changing university environment. The chapters of part 1, "The Turbulent Environment," are: (1) "The International Context for UK Higher Education" (Robin Middlehurst); (2) "The Impact of National Developments on Institutional Practice" (Rob Cuthbert); and (3) "The Student Experience" (Rob Shorrock). The second section, "Running the Business," includes: (4) "Strategic and Operational Planning" (Tom Kennie); (5) "The Ethical Manager: Working with and through Colleagues" (Anne Gold); and (6)"Managing the Human Resource Function" (Catherine Haines and Steve Ketteridge). Part 3, "Creating Intellectual Wealth," contains: (7) "Managing Postgraduate Research Degrees" (Stan Taylor); (8) "Managing High-Impact Research Groups" (Ewan Ferlie, Janet Harvey, and Andrew Pettigrew); and (9) "Developing a Strategic Culture for Research" (Ken Young).
