Abstract | This discussion of the major issues confronting the human factors profession begins by pointing out that the concepts of systems and system design are central to the roles and functions of the human factors specialist. Three related disciplines--human factors engineering, ergonomics, and human skilled performance--are briefly described, and the current status of the field is discussed in the context of a model of the structure of human factors applications in a military setting. A discussion of future issues emphasizes the small size of the human factors work force relative to the hardware/software engineering work force as it considers the use of computer technologies to make a highly leveraged impact on design, and the construction of databases for the computer-based leverage needed to resolve the "numbers" issue. Resolutions to these issues are suggested, including the creation of human factors engineering databases that are directly usable by design engineers, the use of computer-assisted drafting and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) applications of the computer, and the evolution of a unified engineering system in which engineers and human factors specialists will work together to design complete systems in which the design of the human interface takes into account the findings of human factors research.
