Abstract | Trends in enrollments and degrees for physics and astronomy students are examined, based on the American Institute of Physics' annual Survey of Enrollments and Degrees. A total of 787 physics and/or astronomy degree-granting departments were contacted. Information is included on: physics enrollments and degrees awarded by academic year, 1974-1986; undergraduate and graduate enrollments and degrees by physics degree-granting schools by degree type, 1974-1986; introductory physics enrollments in physics degree-granting institutions by geographic region, 1975-1986; undergraduate physics majors by geographic region and level of institution, 1985-1986; trends in entering U.S. and foreign graduate physics students, 1976-1986; foreign graduate physics students and number of teaching assistantships by region and type of institution, 1985-1986; full- and part-time graduate physics enrollment by type of institution, 1976-1986; actual and projected number of physics doctorates granted, 1975-1990; number of physics degrees granted by sex and minority group status, 1984-1985; trends in astronomy enrollments and degrees, 1976-1986; and astronomy enrollments (1985-1986) and degrees (1984-1985) by type of institution.
