Abstract | This guide is designed to be used in developing and improving school library media programs and in teaching students how to use the library. Topics covered include: general philosophy; specific goals; roles and responsibilities; resources needed; creating a library media center; curriculum (including a brief scope and sequence of library skills); public relations ideas; hints for lettering bulletin boards, posters, and signs; bulletin board ideas; evaluation tools; suggestions for what to include in print and nonprint media collections and in equipment collections; a suggested reading list for media personnel; a bibliography of library skills resource books; a list of sources of free and inexpensive materials; a directory of publishers, producers, and suppliers of print and nonprint media; and a bibliography of school library media center guides. More than half of this guide comprises curriculum for teaching library skills to elementary and secondary students. Objectives, activities, and worksheets for instruction in the following areas are provided: locating materials; care of materials; circulation procedures; reading for enjoyment; assisting in the media center; parts of a book; card catalogs; the Dewey decimal system; reference materials; outlining; audiovisuals and equipment; periodicals; reading enrichment; and book annotations.
