Abstract | "Neither the additional PISA surveys which scrutinized familial and motivational backgrounds of adolescent learners nor traditional approaches of second language acquisition (SLA) research consider the influence of sociocultural involvements on the learning process or on the learners themselves. This article represents a supplementation to current debates and surveys in the field of educational sociology and SLA research on the lower educational success of adolescent learners with minority language background in comparison to autochtonous adolescent learners. The possibilities which sociocultural perspectives could represent for the research on the linking of discrimination in education and mutilingualism will be discussed. A special emphasis will be laid on a different view of identity, questions of access, power and effects of labeling. The preliminary research design will be described with the focus on the support of data collection by visual access. The article closes with an outlook on the possibilities of sociocultural research approaches in the field of German as a second language." (author's abstract). |
