Abstract | This report examines the internationalization of the U.S. higher education system through text and through statistical data presented in 56 tables and approximately 110 figures. The report is based on a survey of 2,743 accredited colleges and universities in the United States. Chapters have the contents: (1) overall foreign student enrollments; (2) foreign student totals by region, by country, and by level; (3) understanding international student mobility by considering the "push," considering the "pull," and putting the "push" together with the "pull"; (4) foreign student totals in U.S. regions and states; (5) distribution, within the United States of foreign students from certain countries compared to distribution of recent immigrants from the same countries; (6) primary sources of funding and estimated expenditures of foreign students; (7) foreign student enrollments by institutional type; (8) academic and personal characteristics of foreign students; (9) foreign students in Intensive English Language Programs (IELPs); and (10) number and activities of foreign scholars on U.S. campuses.
