AbstractThe purpose of this article is to describe the ways in which the artist residencies supported preservice teachers' acquisition of content knowledge and skills and influenced their confidence level with regard to integrating the arts in field experiences in early childhood classrooms. This article begins with a description of the artist residencies. This residency centered on papermaking as an art form. The preservice teachers learned about the history of papermaking, along with ways to link this art form to different subject areas across the early childhood curriculum. The preservice teachers had the opportunity to use different techniques to make paper. Techniques included using recycled paper and plant pulp. The paper produced from these techniques was used to create booklets and collages. The authors share the perceptions of the preservice teachers in terms of how they viewed the residencies as having helped them achieve course objectives. Finally, the overall benefits of this Artist in Residence program are discussed. (ERIC).
