Abstract | This article gives a general picture of the policy and main structural features of early childhood education services for the younger children in Finland. It also provides an overview of the research on 1 to 3-year-old children in day care centres carried out in Finland during the last 15 years, the focus being on a review of all the eight doctoral dissertations conducted in the educational and other human sciences during that period of time. The themes of these studies vary: five of them deal with particular content areas of early childhood education, two with play, one with music and two with mathematics. The rest are on children's sleep-wake-rhythms and needs for activity and movement, adjustment to day care and interaction in specific adult-organized activity sessions. In this article, brief descriptions and a short comparative summary of these dissertations will be presented. At the centre of the review are the studies' aims, theoretical frameworks, methods and main findings, as well as the pedagogical implications drawn from the studies. (As Provided). |
