Abstract | The early history of educational hygiene was largely the history of "school hygiene." The name was accurately indicative of character--the hygiene of the school as an environment rather than as a "community of children" learning under the leadership of teachers to know and live health. Environment bulked large; the education of individuals for health, either personal or civic, was comparatively little thought of. The older books on school hygiene and the proceedings of school hygiene congresses show that the matters of major concern were the hygiene of the school plant and equipment; medical inspection for control of communicable diseases; examination for physical defects and development of methods and facilities for correction of defects and disabilities: the hygiene of instruction, especially the relation of fatigue and nervous and emotional strains to programs and technique of instruction; and other environmental factors. This bulletin attempts to present the developments within the past four years in some parts of the field and to summarize the activities of some of the organizations and agencies that are working in this large, varied, complex, and rapidly developing field, within the same period.
