Abstract | Catholic education in the United States is currently facing a period of unprecedented change. An intensifying array of challenges are confronting Catholic schools, and dioceses around the country are scrambling to develop strategies to answer these challenges. In many dioceses, these challenges have forced a radical rethinking of the way schools are governed. Parish-led schools, the dominant model of school governance for centuries, are being reformed or abandoned in favor of alternate governance systems. As dioceses have moved away from parish leadership for schools, the roles of the school leadership have been changed. This paper examines how the centralization of Catholic school administration affects the mission of the school pastor and principal. To assist in this analysis, the Catholic Diocese of Colorado Springs has been selected to be the subject of a qualitative case study. By examining how governance changes in Colorado Springs have affected the mission of school leadership, this study strives to serve as a source of information for other dioceses facing similar transitions.
