AbstractThis workbook was developed to help adult literacy students learn about health care resources in order to know how to keep themselves healthy, when they need to see a health professional, and where to go if they do need to see someone. It contains information sheets, student worksheets, and answers to the worksheets. The information sheets are coordinated with an available audiotape. Some of the topics covered in the workbook are the following: entering the health care system; understanding different levels of health care and choosing the best level; knowing the rights and responsibilities of patients and health professionals; forming good health behaviors and using the right health care resources; and knowing where health care resources are in your community, and what they do. Three appendixes provide information on New York State Offices of Mental Health, various types of self-examination procedures, and New York State health care proxy laws; a glossary lists 23 terms that are underlined in the workbook.
