Abstract | Through the use of anecdote, case study, and analysis, this book establishes a theoretical framework for union trainers to use. Part 1 describes union training--the trainers, participants, union culture, and language and methods. It also examines the differences between trade union training and other forms of adult education and training. Part 2 looks at traditions upon which union training can draw. Part 3 gives a history for union training in Australia. Part 4 looks at writers from the mechanistic tradition to trace the development of the kinds of curriculum design model used by adult educators and trainers working within institutional contexts. Part 5 moves from the mechanistic tradition to look at what the psychotherapy tradition has to offer to encourage discovery and insight learning in union training. Part 6 explains what the community development tradition has to offer. It identifies ideas and modes of operation from a number of radical adult educators who have operated at the cutting edge of social change. Part 7 discusses "The Third Contract" that involves a two-way relationship between the union as represented by the participants and the union as an organization--and this relationship is mediated by the ideals of unionism. Contains 105 references. (YLB) |
