Abstract | Building a repertoire of teaching skills means organizing instructional strategies in some meaningful way. In this brief essay, the author recommends that beginning teachers develop a repertoire comprised of a mix of strategies from each of Joyce, Weil, and Calhoun's (2004) categories: three strategies from the Cognitive Family (Concept Attainment, Concept Formation, and Inquiry); one from the Personal Family (Synectics); one from the Social Family (Cooperative Learning); and two from the Behavioral Family (Contingency Contracting and Target Teaching). She encourages practicing educators to assess their teaching repertoires, and suggests that teacher educators come to an agreement about what they believe to be critical strategies and identify courses in which these strategies will be introduced, practiced, and coached.
