Abstract | While the author can see many ways that artificial intelligence can be used as an adult, a professional, and a business owner, she also realized what it was going to do for children who are learning their basic skills, such as how to write, how to work with numbers, how to think for themselves, and how to make considered choices. What would this new technology do to one of the most important organs in their bodies, their brains? This article recounts the author's exploration of ChatGPT, which leads to her recommendation that for elementary-age students, this tool is kept out of their hands as long as possible and lessons are not built around its use. Until a child is literate, can read and comprehend what they are reading, write clearly and convincingly, and compute through basic algebra using only their own brainpower, the author recommends not introducing artificial intelligence into the classroom in any way.
