Abstract | As one of the most high-performing countries according to education, Japan is counted to the big winners of PISA. In no other OECD-country the performance difference between pupils with diverse social backgrounds is as marginal as in Japan. But also in only few countries, mainly in East Asia, the uncompromising competitive pressure seems to be as high. In the conflict between conformity and competition the Japanese pupils are under enormous pressure to perform. According to that this article wants to discuss cause and effect of these two sides and shed light on the educational reforms and the future challenges of the educational system. (DIPF/Orig.). |
