Abstract | It is all too common, given the considerable day-to-day challenges facing those involved in education, to focus on the here and now rather than look further afield. The authors of this article have been fortunate enough to see "primary science" in a wide range of international settings, from Nigeria to Chile, North America and Canada, and in many countries across the continent of Europe. Many are aware of the UK Government's enthusiasm for comparing the quality of science provision in the UK with that in other countries. How is it different? What do we share? Indeed is there such a thing as primary science in every country? This article provides a world tour of primary science practices, and provides snapshots of what is offered to children in this age group in many other countries. What is most noticeable is the strength of the UK's state school system in delivering science to the primary age phase, whereas in much of the world the better quality provision lies in the private sector.
