Abstract | The 19 articles of this volume are arranged into three sections: In part 1 theory, methods and context of Comparative Education in the 1990s are discussed with a special example concerning comparative and international education at UK universities. Part 2 contains articles on methods and examples of studying classrooms and schools in comparative perspective (e. g. classroom ethnography, intercultural comparisons). The papers in part 3 are about "comparing pupil achievement" and are discussing the topics: some unresolved problems in measuring the quality of educational outputs; the "tyranny of league tables" in international comparison; validity, reliability and utility problems in comparative research on pupil achievement; and a study about "comparing children's learning, attitude and performance in French and English primary schools."
