Abstract | This report presents survey results addressing the reinvigoration and redefining of the union-academic connection in higher education. The survey's purpose was to provide illustrations of what is being done in this area and offer models for cooperative projects. The report is divided into five sections. Section 1 presents the quantitative data from the survey, organized by major categories of responses. Section 2 offers concrete examples to illustrate the range of labor/higher education cooperation, based on the categories listed in Section 1. Section 3 reports on what the state AFL (American Federation of Labor)/CIO (Congress of Industrial Organizations) presidents propose as new initiatives for cooperation between labor and higher education. Section 4 presents a series of model projects submitted by the state federation presidents as examples of the benefits of cooperation between the sectors. Section 5 is an analysis of the report along with recommendations for heightened labor/higher education collaboration. The appendices include several statements adopted by the Labor/Higher Education Council affecting the way campuses and labor organizations relate, along with a list of the responding state federations.
