AbstractUsing a sequential approach, this booklet identifies a number of research skills students need to become independent in gathering and presenting information. The booklet begins with a brief description of the sequential development of research skills it recommends, a bar graph representation of the skills used as a curriculum planner, and a preface that offers an overview of skills to be taught at the elementary, middle school/junior high, and high school levels. It next presents descriptions of 16 elementary school level research paper activities designed to promote skill in collecting and recording information, notetaking, using reference sources, and organizing notes for writing. The booklet then offers suggestions for helping older students write papers; sets forth minimum requirements for papers at 9th, 10th, and 11th and 12th grade levels; offers exercises on how to use "Reader's Guide" and the card catalog, begin the paper, prepare a bibliography, and evaluate the paper. The last section of the booklet discusses the writing skills Wisconsin colleges look for in entering students and presents two statements on writing prepared by the University of Wisconsin at Madison. The booklet contains a 24-item bibliography. (FL)
