Abstract | Two model programs for integrating the language arts and specific lessons that integrate language arts activities for kindergarten through grade 12 are described in this booklet. The two programs are (1) the New Brunswick Comprehensive Reading/Language Arts Program, which has five critical experiences as the core of the program: sustained silent reading, oral and written composing, reading aloud to children, responding to literature, and investigating and mastering basic skills; and (2) the Wisconsin Writing Project, which provides a process model of writing for unifying the language arts through composition. The descriptions of integrated language arts activities include those for webbing (i.e., mapping a variety of experiences that are related to one theme, topic, book, or concept), television viewing, news reporting, and creative dramatics. The booklet concludes with teaching strategies and activities for integrating listening into the language arts. (HOD) |
