Abstract | Because many pesticides are potentially injurious to their users and can have a deleterious effect on the environment when misused, the Environmental Protection Agency has restricted the use of some chemicals to certified users only. A program was developed to assess the need for training in pesticide use, to develop the necessary curriculum, to conduct a pilot training program, and to assess the results and the costs. Four instructional delivery systems (conventional reading, slide-tape, printed/programed, and audio-assisted) were developed to teach a curriculum centered around: (1) common pests, (2) label reading, (3) calibration, (4) environmental considerations, and (5) basic safety. Effectiveness Tests were statistically analyzed, and the audio-assisted method was shown to be significantly inferior to the other three methods. A discussion of the research methodology and statistical results are provided, and the appendix includes extensive samples of the experiemntal curricula. (EMH) |
