Abstract | A policy briefing report discusses the initiatives currently in place in New Hampshire that are designed to enhance that state's economic and educational effectiveness in order to improve its international competitive position. The report is divided into four major areas of discussion: (1) an overview of the global economic challenge and the New England Board of Higher Education project that addresses international competitiveness; (2) New Hampshire's economy within the international context; (3) New Hampshire's programs for enhancing its international economic competitiveness; and (4) the role and development of higher education in New Hampshire in preparing the state for international economic competition. Included in the areas examined are the state's federal and regional resources, state-level strategies, international trade initiatives, educational initiatives, research and development (R&D) investment, and technology transfer and technical assistance. In addition, the concern about a lack of international awareness, what is being done about it, and recent legislative activity are discussed. Recommendations are made in education and training, stimulation of international awareness, R&D investments, technology transfer, and technical assistance. An appendix includes a list of Massachusetts Global Education Centers Programs, a description of the Workforce 2000 Council, and a trade profile for New Hampshire. (GLR) |
