AbstractThis fourth chapter in "Elementary School Counseling in a Changing World" contains four journal articles which focus on the issues of child abuse and neglect. "Parent Support Groups to Prevent Child Abuse" by C. Jerry Downing describes a training and supervision model developed by a parent support group for potentially abusive parents in collaboration with a training and supervision team consisting of a counselor educator, two school counselors, and a nurse practitioner. "A Profile of the Physical Abusers of Children" by Pat Alford, Don Martin, and Maggie Martin reviews the literature to develop a profile of a child abuser and discusses implications for school counselors. "A Preventative Approach to Child Sexual Abuse" by Ann Vernon and Jill Hay describes a sexual abuse prevention program which includes lessons on six different components of sexual abuse and which was designed for children in grades one through six. "Counseling Child Sexual Abuse Victims: Myths and Realities" by Lynn England and Charles Thompson describes the nature and prevalence of child sexual abuse, examines myths and realities about the topic, and presents recommendations for interviewing suspected victims of child sexual abuse. The chapter concludes with a set of issues for elementary school counselors to consider about a world of child abuse and neglect. (NB)
