| Abstract | The results of a survey conducted in 1975 were compared with the findings of three previous studies of Finnish public awareness of mass media to determine any changes or trends which might have occurred between the years 1967 and 1975. Data were reported in categories based on the public concept of (1) the most important mass medium, (2) the importance of media in various information roles, (3) the role of communication media in explaining the reasons for and consequences of world events, and (4) the performance of news media in different population groups. Major comparative results indicated that the electronic media and newspapers were still among the most important mass media, chiefly due to their news role; people's socio-economic status greatly determined their relation to the various media; and people living in the country still valued the electronic media and newspapers more than those in the large cities. Television continued to be considered the most important medium, although it has lost ground to other media, i.e., radio, newspapers, magazines, books, and films. (CMV) |
