AbstractA phenomenological design was used to examine the shared experiences of secondary student leaders during Restorative Practices Connection Circle meetings. The Connection Circles meetings were held once a week and led by selected student leaders with the goal of providing a space and opportunity for teachers and students to build stronger relationships in order to foster a more collaborate academic environment. Working together in the academic setting becomes less challenging when you have a relationship with others in the class. Relationships matter both socially and academically. Bandura's Social Learning theory provided the framework for the study. There were two research questions applied: a) What impact does Connection Circles have on Student Leaders? b) What contexts or situations influence or affect the participants experience in the Connection Circles? Data from surveys, a focus group and journal logs were collected from all student participants. The participants shared similar benefits and barriers in their operation of the weekly Connection Circles. Data analysis revealed that all participants used both negative and positive terms to describe their experiences. Each student in the study journaled about the benefits of conducting Connection Circles. The results of this study support the implementation of Connection Circles in secondary schools. The results should be used to guide the decision-making process of district leaders, school administrators and teachers looking to implement a school-wide PBS initiative.
