Abstract | Licensed social work practice requires a willingness on the part of the practitioner to adhere to a professional values, knowledge, and skills base as reflected in the National Association of Social Workers' Code of Ethics. Students who understand and aspire to this, and who gain experience interacting with people in a service capacity, will be able to make a more informed decision about their goodness of fit with the professional requirements of social work. The literature on adult learning reinforces service learning as an effective pedagogical approach to facilitate development of professional values. Experiential learning and reflection, two essential components of adult learning, are the essence of the service learning methodology. This article discusses how adult students in a social work program were supported in heightening and deepening their professional values through a successful service learning partnership between a faculty member at Capital University's Dayton Center and a practitioner with East End Community Services in Dayton, Ohio.
