| Abstract | In 1999, Wallace took stock of itself and concluded that although its work had had some notable successes, it had not spurred as many widespread, sustained changes as might be possible with a different approach to philanthropy. Thus was born a re-structuring of the foundation around the notion of fueling change through developing and sharing effective ideas and practices. Wallace's 2009 report looks at the intervening decade to assess in detail how the foundation's efforts have played out in the areas that most occupied Wallace during the early 2000's: education leadership, out-of-school time learning and arts participation. The report concludes that the foundation succeeded in some ways, fell short in others and encountered both unexpected obstacles and opportunities along the way. Individual sections contain footnotes.
