| Abstract | Firstly this article reviews the attention to research and education in the former Soviet Union. Since the collapse of the country the situation has changed dramatically. The Russian academic community has been affected by a very painful transformation "from the old centrally planned and wellnurtured system to one driven by new market-oriented realities". The transformation process "is more easily appreciated if one first understands its traditional structures and values". Thus, the authors outline the idiosyncrasies of the Russian system describing the traditional structure of Russian academic institutions, the current crisis in the accademic community and the collaboration between American and Russian universities.
