| Abstract | In this article, the author explores how the growing interest in creativity and entrepreneurialism, argued as primary 21st-century skills (Florida, 2002), encourages a focus on the competitive individual and a belief in scarcity. She proposes that we de-emphasize market-based success characterized by individuality, competition, and efficiency to focus instead on community strength, collective engagement, and abundance. Using examples of creative micro-economies that exchange time, skill, and knowledge as currency, she introduces self-organized cultural activity as an alternative to a rhetoric of creative entrepreneurialism. Rather than position art as a quick, easily produced commodity, she rethinks a scenario at her daughter's school to propose meaningful cultural engagements that might generate immeasurable community potential. She suggests we reconsider what we value and how we articulate success to counter the focus on the competitive individualist and pivot toward ideas of collective effort based on abundance. (ERIC). |
