AbstractAfter two years of teaching English, history, and wilderness survival in the Inupiaq Eskimo village of Wales, Alaska, the author moved in Brazil to teach English and Theory of Knowledge in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. His four years of experience at the International School of Curitiba have confirmed his belief that international schools are on the cusp of global change. In his current, microcosmic school, students from twenty nations ensure that the definition of an ideal literacy is not so easy to craft. With competing notions of what the students need to know to face the postschool world, the author questions which skills and knowledge should be prioritized. Here, the author proposes to rethink and broaden what it means to study English and what it means to be literate. He asserts that in broadening what it means to study English, people can do much to broaden what it means to be culturally literate. (Contains 1 note.) (ERIC).
