Abstract | This qualitative study aimed to examine the personal experiences of what influences academic success in 9 first-generation African-American college students who attended predominantly White institutions (PWIs). This study examined first-generation African-American college students' experiences of personal and institutional factors contributing to their academic success at predominately white universities in the United States. This study tested emerging adulthood theory and provided new information that explored critical influences on the educational growth of first-generation African-American college students, particularly those related to their academic success. The research question was, "What is the experience of academic success among first-generation African American college students?" The themes in the data were identified using thematic analysis. The findings of this study explained the negative and positive experiences participants encountered while attending a PWI. Participants discussed how having support, a sense of belonging, and resilience contributed to their graduating. This study can increase cultural awareness for minorities in an institutional setting and enhance postsecondary education practices and policies.
