AbstractThe purpose of this research was to identify the career pathways of female high school principals for women pursuing a career in educational leadership and female leaders interested in obtaining executive level leadership positions. Despite increased enrollment and of women in educational leadership programs, leadership certification programs, and a majority secondary teacher population, there is an inequitable number of women in the secondary principalship position in the United States and abroad. The goal of this study was to identify a distinctive pathway for women interested in pursuing the high school principalship leading to an executive level leadership position in education. This study administered the Women in Leadership Questionnaire developed by Gupton and Slick (1996) to 75 female high school principals in order to answer the nine research questions that guided the study. Women's beliefs concerning issues in the workplace, the career pathway of female high school principals, career-related barriers experienced by the female principals, career analysis, common leadership characteristics of female principals compared to their male and female counterparts, and advice for aspiring female leaders was explored. The findings revealed common issues and barriers faced by women in the high school principalship and identified common career pathways that led them to their current position as high school principal. Additional findings revealed through the open-ended and short essay questions that all the women were passionate about the children they serve, were strong instructional leaders, and were compassionate about their faculty and staff and the community they serve. Participants provided in-depth of advice for women pursuing education leadership positions. Recommendations for future study are listed in chapter five.
