AbstractTHE EFFECTIVE AND ECONOMICAL USE OF COMPUTER FACILITIES AS AN AID IN TEACHING SECONDARY SCHOOL MATHEMATICS DEPENDS ON (1) ACCESS TO A TYPE OF FACILITY WHICH PERMITS PROBLEM-SOLVING PROCEDURES (I.E., ALGORITHMS DESIGNED BY A STUDENT) TO BE TESTED BY THE STUDENT AND (2) FACILITY RESPONSE TIME PER PROBLEM. THIS UNIT TIME VARIES WITH THE SIZE, TYPE, AND COST OF AVAILABLE COMPUTER FACILITIES. FOR VERY LOW COST AND SMALL SIZE FACILITIES, THE USE OF ALGORITHMIC LANGUAGES (E.G., ALGOL AND FORTRAN) IS SACRIFICED, RESULTING IN GADGET-ORIENTED, RATHER THAN MATHEMATICS-ORIENTED, STUDENTS. AT THE OTHER EXTREME, FACILITIES RICH IN SOFTWARE (I.E., INTERNAL CAPACITIES TO ENHANCE ALGORITHMIC COMMUNICATIONS) ARE ALSO EXPENSIVE AND OF LIMITED AVAILABILITY TO SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS. TO OBTAIN SOME QUANTITATIVE INFORMATION ON THE EFFICIENCY OF COMPUTER FACILITIES, FIVE TYPICAL PROBLEMS WERE RUN ON SIX TYPES OF COMPUTER FACILITIES. THE TIME TO RUN THE SET OF FIVE PROBLEMS VARIED FROM ABOUT 90 MINUTES TO 3 MINUTES. THE 3-MINUTE SYSTEM WAS A LARGE-SCALE FACILITY LOCATED AT A UNIVERSITY. OF SIGNIFICANT INTEREST WAS THE 20-MINUTE SYSTEM, WHICH CONSISTED OF TELETYPE ACCESS TO A LARGE-SCALE, TIME-SHARING SYSTEM. AT THE PRESENT TIME, SOME FORM OF INDIRECT ACCESS IS THE LEAST EXPENSIVE AND MOST EFFICIENT WAY TO USE COMPUTERS AS INSTRUCTIONAL TOOLS IN TEACHING MATHEMATICS.
