AbstractThe new "AASL Standards for the 21st-Century Learner" offer significant potential for helping library media specialists tailor instruction to student needs. These standards are precise and clear, and they align themselves to reading strategies as well as language arts and content area standards. The new standards will also help strengthen lesson planning with teachers as they provide the detail and examples needed to support the library media specialist's role. Standard 2.1.5 can be the basis for working with teachers to collaborate, exchange ideas, develop new understandings, make decisions, and solve problems. Often, the research steps are the same steps students need to follow to become successful readers. Readers and researchers need to make connections from the known to the new. They need to ask questions, determine importance, eliminate irrelevant information, and constantly redefine their body of knowledge. As new knowledge is acquired, new connections are made, and new questions are asked, students acquire higher-level skills needed for tackling new challenges. This article discusses how library media specialists can help students connect new knowledge with what they already know. It should not be assumed that making connections is easy for students; they need direct instruction. (Contains 1 table.) (ERIC).
