Abstract | The traditional September-through-June school calendar does not provide enough time to meet students' educational needs. Year-round education helps schools meet the needs of all students and rightfully keeps students from working in industrial jobs until graduation. A longer school year would make better use of school facilities, increase teacher pay, expand education programs, and simplify summer child-care problems for parents. Schools in Buena Vista, Virginia, adopted year-round schools to serve the educational needs of students and to ensure the economic future of the community through a prepared work force. Virginia adopted a year-round schedule for its high schools in conjunction with increased graduation requirements. Most successful year-round-school programs have been voluntary at first, allowing students, teachers, and parents to become accustomed to the new schedule. Year-round schedules can also be implemented with limited increased cost. The greatest expenses are teacher salaries, air conditioning, and student materials. Research on the Buena Vista year-round-schools program revealed that more than half of the students participated, attendance increased, the dropout rate decreased, achievement scores rose, and faculty gave strong support.
