Abstract	The implementing regulation for Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments establishes detailed criteria for identifying and eliminating sex discrimination in education programs and activities. This document focuses briefly on answers to some of the questions that have arisen around the implementation. The purpose of Title IX is to prohibit sex discrimination against students and employees of education programs and activities receiving federal funds. It is necessary because of the demonstrated discrimination in admission practices and policies, awards of financial assistance, counseling and counseling materials, vocational education, athletic programs, student health services, and employment policies and practices. The educational and social effects of sex discrimination in education programs and activities are also documented. (JMF)
