AbstractThe National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) offers a voluntary certification program as a means to recognize accomplished teaching in sixteen subject areas, including Library Media. The original standards for Library Media K-12 were published in 2000. In 2009, NBPTS selected a committee of library professionals from across the country representing many aspects of librarianship, and after five grueling but productive work sessions over the course of a year, the committee produced a revised Library Media Standards document that will help define accomplished teaching for school librarians. In this article, the author discusses the NBPTS Library Media Standards then and now. The process of becoming a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) is rigorous and challenging. Most who attempt it consider it to be the most rewarding professional development process ever undertaken. The process requires candidates to be extremely cognizant of their instruction and its impact on students, and the constant reflection required becomes an ingrained habit that provides valuable introspection on one's effectiveness. By earning the title of NBCT, school librarians cement their role of "teacher" in the hearts and minds of their colleagues. Being recognized as an accomplished teacher among staff and students is vital in order to create meaningful collaborative relationships and to be acknowledged as an essential educator. National Board certification can lead to multiple leadership opportunities at the local, state, and national level. Many districts count on the expertise of NBCTs and look to them to serve as leaders and mentors. The NBPTS Library Media standards were carefully and thoughtfully designed to inspire accomplished school librarians to develop high-quality, innovative school library programs that will increase student learning. School librarians can improve their programs by incorporating the National Board Library Media standards into their instruction and challenge themselves further by pursuing National Board certification.
