AbstractThe purpose of this 2-3 day lesson is to introduce students in Grades 2-4 to the idea that people move around the world for a variety of reasons. In this activity, students explore why people move through class discussion, a guided reading, and interviews. The teacher elicits student ideas using the compelling question (Dimension 1 of the C3 Framework): "Why do people move?" After charting their ideas, the students have an initial reading that introduces additional reasons why people move. Students think about questions they can ask of people they know about why they move and how moving changes places. Students develop a list of 2-3 questions to interview three people they know and bring this "evidence" back to class to add to their thinking about why people move. This lesson can be extended by introducing a second compelling question: "How does this change places?" Students can gather evidence from their community or from their interviews to answer this second question. A lesson worksheet is included. (ERIC).
