Abstract | The relationship between higher education and society is explored. Consideration is given to definitions and models of futurism; alternative futures for society; trends and alternatives in education; the value of higher education; enrollment projections; financial issues; authority and control issues; the institutions; the students; the faculty; the curriculum; and the technology. It is concluded that the past 10 years have proved that universities cannot be isolated from the society in which they exist, and that they are extremely resilient institutions. (LBH) |
