AbstractThe Empire State College does not have a traditional campus but operates from a variety of leased facilities located in major population centers and in smaller communities where there appeared to be a clear need for such a college. Who are the students attracted to an individualized, contract learning type of program and why do they seek out Empire? What are the components of contract learning, how do students carry it out, and how do they evaluate it? What are the educational outcomes from contract learning and how satisfied are students with this approach to learning? Answers to these questions imply: contract learning seems a particularly well-suited format for the older, working, married adult who may have attended several colleges some years ago. Students differ at entry and throughout the degree program in their ability to handle independent study. The role of mentor becomes crucial if the college is to foster self-learning. An experienced, resourceful, and mature group of faculty committed to the ideal of independent learning is needed to effectively work with students having different styles of learning. The contracting process itself has substantial educational benefits apart from the subject matter the contract addresses. (Author/KE)
