| Abstract | A questionnaire designed to measure changes within the learning environment of a law school was administered to 274 first-year law students at the University of Montreal before they began classes and again after the end of the first term. The largest changes occurred on the Goal Direction and Breadth of Interest scales. Considerable changes appeared on the Intellectual Maturity, Student Interaction, Evaluative and Academic Enthusiasm scales. The smallest change was associated with the Authoritarianism scale. All changes were in a negative or undesirable direction and were statistically significant. It was proposed that certain specific features of the first term's program might in part explain the results. In addition it was suggested that in part the results could be attributable to a general loss of enthusiasm and interest that occurs once the excitement associated with the study of a new discipline wanes.
