Abstract | A study was conducted to examine the relationship between the amount of conflict in a group decision-making process and the achievement of a quality decision. A task problem given to 33 college students completing a group symposium assignment in a basic public speaking and discussion course called for subjects to choose three possible topics for a group symposium from a list of 11 options. After all taped interaction of the groups was collected, group interaction was coded using B.A. Fisher's Decision Proposal Analysis system to determine the amount of conflict present. In addition, group decisions made on a task were ranked according to quality. Correlated results indicated no significant relationship between the amount of conflict and quality of decision made.
