Abstract | Although Western mass media aimed at juvenile audiences aggressively eliminates any references to same-sex desire and behavior, it inspires a tremendous amount of homoerotic fan art. To determine how same-sex potential is portrayed in juvenile fan art, a content analysis was conducted of 872 male homoerotic images by 442 juvenile male and female artists. Male artists tended to enhance the physicality of their subjects, aging children into adults, transforming nonhumans into humans, and portraying them with bodybuilder's physiques, while female artists tended to minimize or erase physicality. Both imagined situations that reflected the dangers of expressing same-sex desire in a homophobic youth culture, with surprised and often unwelcome responses to a flirtation or kiss. The characters selected for same-sex romance were usually antagonists rather than close friends, again suggesting an environment where desire must be hidden or displaced. The results are discussed in the context of heteronormativity and queer youth resistance. (Contains 5 tables, 10 figures, and 16 notes.) (As Provided). |
